Vickie Waitsman and John Smyth established a scholarship fund in memory of their son, John H. Smyth, who died suddenly on June 7, 2005, at age 16. Johnny was a 10th grade student at the Julia R. Masterman Laboratory School. Masterman is a Philadelphia public school. Students attend Masterman from all over the city and are admitted based upon academic performance. The John H. Smyth Scholarship Fund is administered by the Masterman School Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, and donations to the Fund will be tax deductible as charitable donations. Donations should be sent to the John H. Smyth Scholarship Fund, c/o the Masterman School Foundation, 1699 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA 19130.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide an annual $5,000 scholarship to a member of the Masterman graduating class, beginning with the class of 2006. The students selected will best manifest the characteristics that were embodied in Johnny.
The scholarship award may be used by the recipient for the student’s tuition, room and board; costs and expenses related to travel; and/or the purchase of school supplies, books and/or a computer.
From the day we started the scholarship fund, we have received so many generous donations. We are truly thankful for all of the donations which are sent, not merely during our annual fundraising event, but also during the course of the year.
Each year the recipient will be someone who:
